St. Johnsbury Elementary is a 138,000 sq. ft. facility housing classrooms for grades pre-K-8, an auditorium, a gymnasium, cafeteria and kitchen, library, multi-purpose rooms and administration offices. This project involved renovation of existing space as well as new additions.
Heat is currently provided by 3 cast-iron, high efficiency boilers with a wood chip boiler designed for the future. Boilers are staged and operate in lead-lag. Pumps have variable speed drives. A separate summer hot water heater helps conserve energy. Finned-tube radiation and unit ventilators serve the classroom clusters and office areas with separate thermostat controls in order to meet individual heat requirements. Air handling units heat and ventilate the interior rooms and large open spaces, such as the gym and cafeteria. A rooftop-cooling unit serves the administration area. DDC controls, thermostats with separate set points, and economizer pre-cooling controls, help provide room comfort with energy efficiency.
AHU's with CO2 sensors contribute to energy savings and premium indoor air quality.
